1 Nephi - By A Four-Year-Old

Cute Girl wanted to be the scripture reader tonight at bedtime. She was proud of herself for finding the word "God" in them earlier. Once she found the word "God," she started reading:

"God commanded Laman to go and get the plates from the wicked... Nephi."

"Don't you mean Laban?"

"Yeah. God commanded Nephi to build a ship. Nephi said he didn't know where to get tools. God told Nephi to go to the store on the mountain. Walk, walk, walk to the back of the store and there are boxes and boxes of tools to make a boat."

Shhhhh!!!

"Shhhhh! Mommy be quiet! Handsome Face's going to sleep. I made him a bed in the laundry basket. Handsome Face! Shut your eyes!"

From playtime yesterday

Cute Girl was going to a "ball-feast" the other day and magically turned into Cinderella when she decided to clean up the spilled Cheerios. She made her headband out of glue, two strips of lace, and some sequins from her Fancy Nancy kit. She informs me that it is for Uncle John's wedding.

"Buh-Bye, Mama! See ya later!"

New things

Yesterday during Young Womens, Nichole grabbed my arm and told me to wait a minute. She then handed me a can of pineapple. And I'm thinking, "what on earth am I supposed to do with this?!" Then she rummages in her bag and hands me a recipe for pineapple upside-down cake. Apparently it was to thank me for sharing a chocolate chip cookie recipe. It's not even my own recipe so I don't know how sharing it merits such thanks but it was awfully sweet.

So I took the pineapple home and found out that my husband was really excited for this cake. Funny, because I wasn't. He doesn't like sweets for sweets sake and I can't get enough of them. But I had never tried pineapple upside-down cake. It just never appealed to me.

But I made the cake, which had three cups of sugar (plus the canned pineapple) and 1-1/2 cups of butter. Then we invited friends over so I didn't eat all that sugar and butter myself. Ohhhh, it was good. I have officially been converted to pineapple upside-down cake. I had two pieces last night and I've had two pieces this morning.

Our friends obviously didn't eat enough cake.

Interesting Thoughts from Informed People

I have a love/hate relationship with government and politics. The hate part stems from the fact that I never feel like I have enough information to make an informed opinion on any given topic. Part of this stems from my college training: always question the sources! So here's some thoughts on the health care speech presented to Congress by the President. Just some food for thought.

Room for Debate

More goings-on in our house

Is it really Thursday already? I swear I was going to post yesterday. Oh well.
Here's a question for you. Why do delivery men (and yes, they're all men in our neighborhood) always come in the middle of naptime? And why do they either ring the bell twice or get it stuck so that it's constantly buzzing?
I am now the proud owner of one 5 qt crockpot, two 5.5 qt crockpots, and three 5.5 qt crockpot stonewares. All this due to breakage, replacement, breakage, and more replacement. What am I supposed to do with all these extra crocks?
Cute Girl is now the proud owner of a Combi Dakota booster seat (hence the doorbell at naptime). Yay for no more cumbersome carseat. Boo to her no longer being able to buckle herself in because of the shoulder strap adjustment.
Handsome Face is still sick. We hate fevers. But this didn't stop us from going to ride bikes with the same kids we traded germs with on Monday.
Our car is sometimes not starting. This is a big sometimes, as in the car won't start when I have to go to my church meetings in the evenings. It always works for the Rocket Scientist and it works when I run errands Saturday morning. Just Wednesday and Thursday nights it decides it doesn't want to go to church. I completely missed my meeting last night. And I really wanted to go!

Pictures, Thoughts, and Random Goings-On

My children have been struggling with high fevers for the past four days so life has been a bit tiring. I've been meaning to post for awhile but haven't had the time. The kids are currently hiding under the blanket covered coffee table so I'm going to see what tidbits I can throw up here really quick.

Last week we discovered that Cute Girl no longer had any shorts that fit. This is a problem as we wear shorts ten months out of the year. So we did two things: cleaned out her closet and shopped for clothes.
I am not a pack rat and I HATE useless clutter and LOVE tossing things out. But I also subscribe to the "waste not, want not" mentality so this means I keep all my kids clothes for the future babies. When your first child is the first grandchild on both sides and a girl, this adds up to a lot of baby clothes. It also means that I'm running out of storage room. So I spent the better part of a day trying to condense all of my tubs of girl clothes. After an hour, I had taken this tub which contains only 0-3 months clothesand combined it with the 3-6 months clothes to produce this: I was very proud of myself, even if it did take all day and the lid won't close. But then we had to go shopping which I mistakenly thought would be easy. It's the end of summer and all the shorts would be on clearance, right? Wrong. There aren't any shorts on clearance. In fact, there aren't any shorts anywhere in the stores! I went to Maceys, Children's Place, Gap, Old Navy, Ross, and Marshall's without finding any shorts on clearance. Finally, we hit Target and found regular priced shorts on the regular sales racks. I grabbed them all because apparently they are the last ones in town. Oh, and did I mention that I hate shopping?

Last Saturday Cute Girl went to her first ever Primary Activity. It was a service project putting together school kits for children in Colombia. We collected supplies for a month (she took pencils and erasers) and then the kids each got to assemble one kit. They also colored pictures for the children, watched a service video, and ate popsicles. Here Cute Girl is with Kate and Anna. Can you believe that even though they are all the same age and all Sunbeams, none of them are in the same Primary class? Our ward is that big.

Since the kids are sick we've been staying home - no preschool or playgroups. But on Monday my friend Jacie called to see if her son could come play with Cute Girl. She wasn't bothered by the fevers and I didn't mind a quiet little boy entertaining my sickies so we got together. Then today we went to her house to let the kids ride bikes on her large driveway. This whole time I've been worried about my kids giving hers fevers and she's worried about her kids giving colds to mine. Since we weren't bothered by the other person's worries we threw them together anyway. The Rocket Scientist was laughing at our "cross-pollination of germs."

And finally, whoever came up with M&M's "melts in your mouth, not in your hands" didn't live in the desert.
